This week up-and-coming singer Maria Milis released her debut EP Medusa. When talking about the release to Pop Affairs, Maria said, "The EP is in chronological order and genre wise falls into contemporary pop with an element of alternative to it. The EP is inspired heavily by Greek mythology and takes central themes from Greek mythology and each song reflects this is some way." The Greek mythology influence throughout this EP is brilliantly unique and is what I think makes it so memorable. As a new artist to come up with an EP as strongly themed as Medusa and for it to actually work well, seriously highlights the talent and potential that Milis has. The lead single from the EP, Medusa, shows off Maria's songwriting skills fantastically. Keeping the theme of Greek mythology while also managing to keep the song relevant, truly shows what a talent Maria has. The vocals and production in the song are also ridiculously impressive, especially for a new artist. Medusa is the final song on the EP and closes off the body of work really well. What I also find really impressive is the thought and effort that went into putting the track list together. The fact that so much effort was even put into the smaller details, like the track list, shows the listener how much Milis cares about her music, and it's really lovely to see. The opening song Bring Out The Devil In Me is fantastic. The song is quite different to Medusa, yet you can still tell it's Maria who is singing. Once again the lyrics are brilliant, and the song manages to show off Maria's vocals. What strikes me about Maria is her versatility. Usually when artists are starting out they appear to stick to one genre of music because it's where they feel safe, however with Maria this isn't the case. While the main genre is contemporary pop, the different aspects to each song makes for a very interesting listen. Bring Out The Devil In Me opens with electric guitar and explores a pop-rock theme, which I really love! Just by listening to these four songs I get the impression that Maria would be able to cover any genre of music she wanted, and that's a very good skill to have! The next song on the EP is Dreams and Nightmares, which is one of my favourite songs on Medusa. This track seems a lot darker than the rest of the songs on the EP, once again highlighting Maria's versatility. Every song is so brilliantly written, showing that Milis has a natural talent for music. The EP then continues, with Heart For Sale, which is much more of a slower song than the others. The lyrics in this song really make you connect with Maria, as you're captivated by each and every word that she sings. Heart For Sale to me shows off Maria's stunning voice the most, and just listening gets me excited for what the future holds for her! I have no doubt that Maria will get the success that she deserves in the future. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when she becomes a star.
